Newmont Backs Headwater Gold’s Third Nevada Project

Newmont has agreed to fund exploration at Headwater Gold’s Jupiter project in Nevada.

The deal could give Newmont control of the project after staged spending and a prefeasibility study. Headwater will manage the exploration while Newmont carries much of the early project risk.

Topic Snapshot

  • Newmont will spend up to $30-million to earn a 75% interest.
  • Jupiter covers about 28 square kilometres in Nye County.
  • Headwater staked the project only three months ago.
  • Newmont already backs two other Headwater projects in Nevada.
  • Jupiter hosts a potential large epithermal gold system.
  • Drilling could begin late this year or early next year.

Newmont Commits $30-Million to Jupiter

Newmont has agreed to spend up to $30-million on the Jupiter gold project.

The company can earn an initial 51% interest by spending $10-million over four years.

A further $20-million over three years would increase its interest to 65%.

Newmont could reach a 75% interest by completing a prefeasibility study.

Jupiter Covers a Large Nevada Exploration Area

The Jupiter project covers about 28 square kilometres in Nye County.

It sits roughly 370 kilometres southeast of Carson City.

Headwater staked 352 unpatented claims on federal land in May.

The property covers an altered volcanic zone measuring about 5 by 8 kilometres.

Headwater believes the area could form part of a large epithermal gold system.

Newmont Deal Reduces Headwater’s Exploration Risk

The agreement gives Headwater access to major exploration funding.

The junior will continue to manage exploration work at Jupiter.

Newmont will fund most of the early exploration costs.

This reduces the financial burden on Headwater while giving the company exposure to potential gold discoveries.

The deal also marks Headwater’s third Newmont-backed Nevada project.

Newmont Already Backs Two Headwater Projects

Newmont already supports Headwater’s Spring Peak and Lodestar projects.

Both projects remain at an early exploration stage.

At Spring Peak, drill hole SP22-13 returned 2.38 metres at 15.92 grams of gold per tonne.

That high-grade interval occurred within a broader 34.7-metre zone grading 2.73 grams per tonne.

At Lodestar, drilling has outlined a 600-by-700-metre Meridian alteration zone.

Jupiter Has Historical Gold Results

Previous operators explored Jupiter intermittently between 1981 and 2020.

Most historical drilling was shallow.

Historical hole JURC0001 returned 9.1 metres at 1.1 grams of gold per tonne.

The intersection began at 112.8 metres downhole.

Surface rock samples also returned grades of up to 3.1 grams per tonne.

Headwater has not independently verified these historical results.

Exploration Program Will Expand the Data

Headwater plans more exploration work before drilling begins.

The company will conduct:

  • Geological mapping
  • Surface sampling
  • Geophysical surveys
  • Initial drilling

The first drill program could start late in 2026 or early in 2027.

These programs will test the scale and continuity of the Jupiter mineralized system.

Prefeasibility Study Sets a Higher Earn-In Threshold

Newmont’s final earn-in stage carries a clear development requirement.

The company must complete a prefeasibility study based on at least 1.5 million ounces of gold or gold equivalent.

Headwater would also receive a 2% net smelter return royalty.

The structure gives Newmont a path to greater project control if exploration produces a sufficiently large resource.

Headwater Receives Additional Deal Benefits

Headwater will receive a 10% management fee during the initial earn-in period.

Newmont will also reimburse $250,000 of Headwater’s earlier spending.

The agreement allows the junior to preserve capital while advancing Jupiter.

This gives Headwater a stronger position across its Nevada exploration portfolio.

Nevada Gold Activity Continues to Grow

The Jupiter agreement comes during renewed gold exploration activity in Nevada.

Major producers are expanding their positions across the state.

Newmont and Barrick Mining recently agreed to add several projects to Nevada Gold Mines.

The resulting portfolio includes Fourmile, Mike and Fiberline.

The transaction could create a major gold complex containing nearly 100 million ounces.

Headwater Has a Wider Partner-Funded Portfolio

Headwater’s portfolio extends beyond its Newmont-backed Nevada projects.

OceanaGold funds three of its Nevada projects.

Centerra Gold also backs a Headwater project in Idaho.

The company’s strategy gives it exposure to multiple exploration targets without funding all programs alone.

Jupiter Could Add to Headwater’s Gold Portfolio

The Jupiter agreement gives Headwater another major exploration opportunity in Nevada.

The project has a large alteration footprint and historical gold results.

Further mapping and drilling will test whether these signs represent a larger economic deposit.

For Newmont, the deal provides access to a new exploration target in a major gold district.

Closing

The Newmont-Headwater Jupiter agreement adds another Nevada exploration project to their partnership.

Newmont will fund up to $30-million to earn a 75% interest, while Headwater manages the work.

The next major catalyst will be exploration drilling at Jupiter, expected late this year or early next year.
